Protect European Democracy—Ban X Now! #XitNow

We demand the European Union take immediate action to address Elon Musk's platform X (formerly Twitter). The platform has devolved into a cesspool of hate, disinformation, and abuse. It undermines the democratic values, transparency, and inclusivity that define Europe. X not only amplifies harmful narratives but also disrupts public trust in institutions and the principles of fair discourse. The EU must act decisively to protect its citizens and uphold the integrity of its digital spaces.

Amplifying Extremist Narratives
In Germany, a far-right terrorist attack at a Christmas market claimed lives, with the attacker reportedly emboldened by Musk amplifying extremist AfD propaganda. Musk actively interferes in elections across Europe by advancing a far-right movement that normalizes extremist views and undermines democratic values. In the UK, anti-Muslim protests escalated in August 2024, fueled by misinformation and hatespeech spread on X. This app has become a tool for spreading division and undermining the principles of equality, inclusion, and public safety upheld by the EU.

Manipulated Public Opinion
Musk's decision to hide likes on posts ahead of the U.S. elections raises concerns about manipulation and bot activity. By preventing users from verifying authentic engagement, X undermines transparency, which is essential for safeguarding free speech and ensuring political accountability. Democracy cannot thrive when manipulation and deception replace transparency and truth.

Pay-to-Play Speech
Free speech on X has become a pay-to-play privilege. Users who pay gain disproportionate reach and influence, while those who don’t are virtually silenced. This pay-as-you-go free speech model directly contradicts Europe’s commitment to equality, where every voice deserves to be heard, regardless of financial status.

Monetizing Misinformation
Adding to this, X has introduced monetized posts, incentivizing users to prioritize clicks, sensationalize content, and spread misinformation to gain financial rewards. Such incentives distort the debate and pervert the very idea of free speech. Free speech should never be monetized—it is a fundamental right, not a business model. These practices degrade the purpose of social media and distort public conversation.

An Abusive Environment
Musk has stripped away essential safety features, including the removal of blocklists and significant alterations to the blocking function. While blocked users are still able to view posts, their content also continues to appear in users' feeds, leaving individuals with limited control over their online interactions. This invasive design compromises privacy, exposes users to harmful accounts, and undermines Europe’s commitment to personal safety and respect.

A Toxic Algorithm
The algorithm on X is designed to amplify division rather than connection. It prioritizes showing users content they didn’t follow, aren’t interested in, or actively disagree with. Instead of nurturing friendships and fostering shared interests, X exploits negativity to drive engagement. This approach fosters outrage and conflict, creating an environment where division is profitable and meaningful dialogue is sidelined.

Violation of EU Laws
X blatantly ignores the Digital Services Act (DSA), a key regulation designed to protect Europeans from online harm. By failing to comply with requirements like content moderation, algorithmic transparency, and the removal of illegal content, X undermines the EU’s efforts to create a safe digital environment. Musk operates above the law, endangering citizens, eroding trust in democratic institutions, and defying the principles of accountability and fairness enshrined in EU regulations.

The European Union has the tools to take decisive action against platforms like X. By enforcing stricter regulations, imposing significant fines, or even implementing a full ban, the EU can ensure that digital platforms align with its laws and values. These measures are not just options—they are necessary steps to protect democracy, transparency, and the well-being of all European citizens.

This is our moment to demand change. Social media should unite us, not divide us! Platforms must respect laws, uphold fairness, protect diversity, and empower all voices equally. #XitNow

Warum ist das wichtig?

This is important because X has become a platform that amplifies hate, misinformation, and division, undermining democratic values and public trust. The European Union must act to ensure that digital platforms uphold fairness, transparency, and inclusivity, protecting citizens and fostering a safe online environment for everyone.
